Do you ever go back to that day your loved one passed? Or go back to the days just before? Everyone’s experience is your different, but for me, my Mom slowly died over 3 days.

Recently, I was listening to Pandora on the internet and the song “How to Save a Life” by The Fray came on. That song was on the radio a lot the summer of 2006, which was the summer my Mom passed away. She used to watch Grey’s Anatomy, I never watched it. After she passed away I started to watch the show. Why? Well, my Mom liked it and I felt like I was watching it for her since she wasn’t here anymore. So back to the song, when ever I would hear that song I thought of my Mom in the hospital, slowly dying. Her body was shutting down over the short time she was in the hospital and the line,
I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
it sticks with me. I was with her and how did I not know how to save her life. I’m not a doctor and they weren’t saving her, so how was I supposed to? Well, I’m her daughter and I would have done anything to save her life, anything.

So as I said, the song came on and it took me right back to those awful 3 days that I was losing my Mom. It’s been 5 1/2 yrs and I can remember every detail and every feeling. Death is such a painful thing for the living, I wonder how it is for those dying, I wonder how it was for my Mom. The nurse told me she wasn’t in any pain when she died. I hope that nurse was right. I felt so hopeless. I couldn’t do a thing for my Mom, except be by her side. Was that enough? I will always wonder. The doctors and nurses told my family and I that my Mom hung on longer than they thought she would. I do believe that. I think I got 4 or 5 calls from the hospital over those 3 days telling me and my family to get to the hospital to say our goodbyes because she didn’t have much time. We went there and she hung on a little longer.

Those 3 days that my Mom was slowly dying, I can’t explain in words the pain I felt. Just that it was awful. I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t function. Death is a part of life, but why does it have to be so hard on the living. I understand there are ups and downs in life, but damn, death hurts so much. Our loved one will always be a part of your life, only now it will be in new and different ways.

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

Death sure can pull at our heart.

This Christmas my family was without three loved ones. My Grandma who passed away in December 2000, my Mom who passed away in July of 2006 and my Grandpa who passed away in March of this year. Christmas Eve was truly not the same. We did not get together with my Aunts and Uncles like we have for my whole life. Instead, we stayed home, my husband and my boys. I made cookies during the day and put Split Pea Soup in the crock pot for dinner. The days leading up to Christmas Eve were harder than Christmas Eve itself. It was just another day at home. I can’t figure out why, but I thought I would be so sad and upset, but I wasn’t. Sometimes the anticipation is harder than the actual event. In all honestly, it was nice to not eat a huge meal with too many choices so I eat a little bit of everything. That is what happens every year on Christmas Eve with my family and Christmas Day with my husbands family. This year on Christmas Day we also just stayed home. My husband, my boys and me. The boys played with their new toys all day long.
It wasn’t the worst Christmas ever, just a Christmas without.

The Nation pays tribute to those members of the military who have fallen and to their families. Please take time to be thankful for the freedom you have, be thankful for those who have served and are still serving in our military, because without the past and present men and women who have served and are still serving in our military, we would not have the freedoms we have today. There will be many public ceremonies and parades in honor of this day. There will be private prayers said by so many, today is a day to be thankful to others and grateful for what you have been given.
